The Virginia Lottery turns 33!
New look, same fun!
Let's reflect on the past and keep an eye on the future!
The Virginia Lottery is celebrating its 33rd birthday in 2021 after selling its first ticket at midnight on September 20, 1988. That first ticket was the $1 Match 3 Scratcher, and, since then, the years have been filled with many memorable milestones for players, retailers, employees and Virginia’s public schools.
Players have purchased more than $44 billion in tickets, and the Lottery has awarded more than $26 billion in prizes to players and paid nearly $2.5 billion in commissions and incentives to thousands of retailer partners. More importantly, since the establishment of the Lottery Proceeds Fund in 1999, the Lottery has turned over a combined $11 billion in profits for K-12 public school programs.
The Lottery’s 33rd birthday also is an opportunity to unveil a fresh, new logo. From the first version in 1988, which was updated in 2012, to the newest version unveiled in September 2021, Virginians will continue to recognize the same iconic crossed fingers, but they will look just a little different.
A lot has changed in 33 years, but what has not changed is the Lottery’s commitment to providing fun, entertaining experiences and doing so responsibly and with integrity.
